Pune, 6th September 2023: In a recent incident, a city-based businessman fell victim to a fraudulent scheme in which he was swindled out of a staggering Rs 66.33 crore. The scammers posed as individuals offering seized customs goods at a bargain price.

Subsequently, an FIR has been filed against four suspects residing in Navi Mumbai, with suspicion that they may have duped several other businesspeople out of substantial sums of money.

The individuals named in the FIR are Dashrath Machindra Kokre and Varsha Dashrath Kokre of Soham Impex Pvt Ltd, along with Mahesh Rambhau Bandgar and Sagar Rambhau Bandgar, all of whom reside in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. The complainant is a Market Yard-based businessman who operates within the wholesale market and specializes in the export of betelnut and black pepper.

The businessman was introduced to the Kokre, one of the accused, by a third party. The fraudsters convinced him that they had access to goods seized by customs authorities and could offer them at significantly reduced prices. They further assured him of lucrative returns on his investment in their business venture. To add credibility to their scheme, the accused Kokre presented a counterfeit email purportedly sent by the Health Department of the Central Government.

Trusting these assurances, the businessman invested a substantial sum of Rs 66.33 crore in the suspects’ business. However, after making the investment, he received no returns as promised. Realizing that he had fallen victim to a scam, he promptly reported the matter to the police.

The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the case, led by API Ruikar.
