Nana Peth, 1st September 2024: Vanraj Andekar, a former corporator of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was shot in the Nana Peth area of Pune around 9:45 pm today. Andekar also sustained injuries from sharp weapons and was immediately rushed to KEM Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Joint CP Ranjan Sharma told reporters.

“Andekar was standing with his cousin at Inamdar Chowk when the incident took place”, Sharma added.

According to Pune Police officials, the Andekar family, including Vanraj’s father, Bandu Andekar, has a notorious history of gang-related activities. Just recently, Bandu Andekar, along with six others, was charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), though he was granted bail in the case.

Investigators are currently exploring the possibility that the shooter may be a close relative or associate, as suggested by initial leads.

More details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
