Pune: Five Killed as Hoarding Collapses in Dehuroad Area of Pimpri Chinchwad
Pune, 17th April 2023: Five people lost their lives and three others were injured after a hoarding collapsed in Kiwale, Dehuroad area of Pimpri Chinchwad on Monday evening. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds had forced several citizens to take shelter under the hoarding.
The hoarding collapsed due to the strong winds and trapped some of the people who had taken shelter underneath it. The police and fire brigade personnel immediately rushed to the spot upon receiving information about the incident.
The rescue work is currently underway, and six cranes are being used to remove the debris and shift the injured to the hospital. The rescue team has already managed to pull out one person safely.
The incident has caused a massive crowd at the spot, and locals are also extending their support to the rescue workers.
The authorities have advised citizens to be cautious during such weather conditions and to avoid taking shelter under hoardings or any other temporary structures.
Dr. Sudhir Mehta, Lead & Coordinator, Pune Platform for Cooperative Response (PPCR), said, “It’s been a tragic couple of days in Pune, with two major hoarding-related accidents. The news of five people losing their lives due to a collapsed hoarding in Kiwale PCMC is extremely distressing. The current sky signage policies need to be urgently revisited by the administration, even if these hoardings were legal. The city is overwhelmed with both legal and illegal hoardings, it is not only a visual blight on the city’s cultural fabric but also poses a severe threat to public safety, and now costing valuable lives.
We have been advocating the removal of all illegal hoardings and flexes with the city’s administration and political leadership on behalf of the Pune Platform for Collaborative Response (PPCR) and are looking forward to swift action against the menace.”
