Pune: FDA Launches Crackdown On Artificial Mango Ripening And Unsafe Ice Use In Summer Beverages

Pune, 19th April 2025: As the mango season is in full swing, concerns have surfaced regarding the use of harmful substances to artificially ripen the fruit. Vendors are reportedly using banned agents such as calcium carbide and acetylene gas, posing a serious threat to public health. In response, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an intensive inspection drive across the city.
According to officials, traders and fruit sellers are under close scrutiny. The use of calcium carbide to ripen mangoes and other fruits is strictly prohibited, and any violations will result in strict action. While the use of ethylene gas is legally permitted for ripening, it must follow specific guidelines. Notably, direct spraying of ethylene gas on fruits is banned, and traders are expected to comply with all safety norms.
If any fruit is found to have been ripened using calcium carbide, samples will be sent to laboratories for testing. Legal action will be initiated against violators, and in cases where mangoes are ripened by direct ethylene spraying, the entire stock will be seized and destroyed. The FDA also stated that workshops have been organized for fruit sellers to educate them on proper handling, storage, and sales practices.
In a related move, with summer temperatures rising and cold beverages being sold across city streets, the FDA has also begun inspecting ice used by vendors selling drinks, sugarcane juice, and ice cream. Officials are collecting ice samples and sending them for laboratory testing. It was noted that many vendors continue to use industrial ice, which is unsafe for consumption. The ongoing crackdown aims to curb this hazardous practice and ensure consumer safety.
