Akurdi, 17th November 2023: In a blatant violation of environmental norms, electric lighting has been installed on trees in the Pradhikaran and Akurdi area on the occasion of Diwali, prompting environmentalists to call for immediate action by the administration.

Environmentalist Prashant Raul has brought this matter to the attention of the Municipal Corporation, emphasizing that the illumination of the trees violates conservation norms and urban aesthetics.

The road divider in Sambhaji Chowk in Akurdi features trees on the footpath that have been adorned with electric lighting. Raul, along with other concerned citizens, had previously requested that no electric lighting be installed on the trees, and the Municipal administration was duly informed. However, an electrical contractor proceeded to install the lighting, contravening regulations.

Highlighting that these trees are municipal property, Raul pointed out that electric lighting on trees is a violation of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Despite efforts by the previous commissioner to preserve the trees, the current commissioner has allowed electric lighting, contrary to regulations. Raul has issued a warning, indicating that if prompt action is not taken, the police will be summoned to address the violation.

While the area attracted visitors during Diwali, with many capturing photo sessions, the beautification efforts have stirred controversy. Environmentalists argue that such practices not only violate rules but also pose dangers to wildlife. Calls for swift action to remove the electric lighting and enforce environmental regulations have gained momentum.
