Pimpri, 6th November 2023: In the industrial cities of Pimpri Chinchwad, Diwali bonuses have brought joy to thousands of workers across various industries. However, a mixed picture is emerging as protests against company management continue in some firms, creating a sense of conflict ahead of the festival.

As Diwali approaches, workers have received bonuses, and the city’s markets are bustling with customers. Concurrently, labour strikes and protests persist in many companies within the city and industrial estates, with workers expressing their demands and grievances against the management. This Diwali, while citizens throng to shop in the adorned markets, workers are seen protesting against their company management, highlighting the contrasting scenes within the industrial city.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has earned recognition as the wealthiest municipal corporation in the Asian continent, driven by revenue from companies in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Industrial Estate and various taxes. This financial prosperity also reflects on the financial health of companies within the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). Recently, these companies faced challenges from global economic recessions, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and other factors. Nevertheless, multinational corporations (MNCs) weathered these challenges more resiliently. Alongside these issues, strained labour-management relations have fueled disputes in numerous firms, involving establishing new trade unions and various demands.

Several large and medium-sized enterprises in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Industrial Estate are currently witnessing conflicts between labour and management. Additionally, workers from General Motors Company in Talegaon MIDC have resorted to a chain hunger strike following unsuccessful talks with the state government.

In reality, fostering a harmonious relationship between workers, trade unions, and company management is crucial for achieving industrial peace and safeguarding the interests of both labour and industry. However, when confusion arises in this relationship, it strains industrial relations. The involvement of a representative from the Labor Commissioner’s office or a private arbitrator can play a vital role in restoring these strained relations. Nonetheless, instances of company management disregarding the orders and instructions from the Labor Commissioner’s Office are further intensifying these industrial relations’ strains. In some cases, it becomes difficult for management to accommodate the demands of trade unions, leading workers to express their discontent through strikes and protests.

Anil Rohm, Council Member at ITC, said “A cordial relationship between the workers and the company management is considered important for the development of both the entities. However, if both these elements realise their responsibility and perform it well, industrial relations are not likely to be strained. Both parties need to be careful that a topic is not strained to straining the relationship.”
