Pune, 25th July 2024: With the intensity of rainfall increasing in Pune city and its surrounding district, authorities have taken precautionary measures to ensure public safety. District Collector Suhas Diwase has announced a holiday for all schools in Pune city and district due to the heavy rain forecast.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert, predicting intense rainfall in Khadakwasla, Bhor, Velha, Maval, Mulshi, and Haveli talukas over the next few hours. In response, Dr. Suhas Diwase, Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, has ordered the closure of schools in these areas for July 25.

Adding to the precautionary measures, the Khadakwasla dam has begun discharging 40,000 cusecs of water. The discharge started at a rate of 35,574 cusecs into the Mutha River basin since 6 AM, and with the dam area recording an average rainfall of 100 mm (and over 200 mm at the ghats), further increases in discharge are anticipated. This has raised concerns about potential waterlogging in low-lying areas of Pune city.

Collector Diwase has urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary. Specific areas have been deemed off-limits to the public to prevent any mishaps.

In light of the current situation, Executive Engineers of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Department have restricted access to several locations:

– Bhide Bridge

– Garware College Khillare Vasti College Campus

– Shitala Devi Temple Deccan

– Sangam Bridge Settlement

– Jayantrao Tilak Bridge (PMC building)

– Holkar Bridge (Khadki)
