Pune 20th Sept 2023: The District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh on Monday held a meeting with the representatives of charitable hospitals, MLAs and concerned officials following complaints against hospitals over not providing treatment under Indigent Patient Scheme (IPF). The scheme aims to provide better treatment to the patients from economically poor backgrounds under which the hospitals can provide free or discounted treatment.

A special committee at the district level looks after the allotment of beds and treatment for the economically poor patients at the charitable hospitals and the district collector functions as the chairperson of the committee. To take a review of the issue following various complaints, a meeting was held which was attended by 39 of the 58 charitable hospitals of the district.

As per the High Court order the charitable hospitals are needed to spend 2% of their revenue for the treatment of economically poor patients to provide free or discounted treatment under the IPF Scheme. However, it was revealed that many of these hospitals had neglected the directions and they were not providing treatment to the poor patients under the scheme. The issue escalated further after a news report was published and the local politicians reached out to the authorities to seek answers. A protest was also organised by the youth wing of BJP over the issue at the city’s renowned hospital.

The district collector has now warned these hospitals of strict action for not providing treatment to the patients under this scheme. Besides, instructions have also been issued to the hospitals to maintain a record of fund utilisation for the scheme and submit the same to the committee every month. He also said that a monthly meeting of the committee can be organised to review the matter.
