Pune District Collector Declares Holiday for Schools and Colleges Due to Heavy Rains on Friday

Pune, 25th July 2024: In response to an advance warning from the Regional Meteorological Department, the Pune District Collector Dr Suhas Diwase, who also serves as the Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), has issued an order declaring a holiday for all schools and colleges in specific areas of Pune District on 26th July 2024. This decision comes after a red alert was issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), predicting heavy rainfall in the region.

Collector Diwase stated, “Given the advance warning from the Indian Meteorological Department and the current heavy rains in Pune district, we are expecting further heavy rainfall in Pune city and the Ghat areas in the coming hours. Therefore, it is necessary to close schools and colleges to ensure the safety of students.”

The areas affected by this order include in Bhor, Velha, Maval, Mulshi, Khadakwasla area of Haveli taluka, Khed, Ambegaon, Junnar, as well as all schools and colleges in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad cities. The holiday applies to all government and private primary and secondary schools, Zilla Parishad schools, municipal, aided and unaided schools, Ashramshalas, and all educational institutes under the establishment of the Commissioner Vocational and Training Center.

In addition, the order also mandates a discharge of 40,000 cusecs of water from Khadakwasla Dam, which poses a risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas of Pune city. “Citizens should exercise vigilance and only go out if necessary,” advised Collector Dr Diwase.

Despite the closure for students, the orSchool holiday on Fridayder specifies that all principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff should attend school during office hours to carry out disaster management work as per the local administration’s directives.

This order, signed and sealed by Dr. Suhas Diwase, is effective immediately. All relevant authorities have been instructed to implement this directive without delay to ensure the safety and well-being of the public amidst the ongoing heavy rains.
