Pune: Demolition Drive Against Illegal Pubs Continues In Baner, Balewadi, Koregaon Park; 19 Establishments Targeted Today

Pune, 26th June 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has demolished 56,061 square feet of illegal construction in areas including Baner, Balewadi, and Koregaon Park. This move comes following an order from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to bulldoze unauthorized pubs and bars.

The proliferation of unauthorized restaurants, bars, and rooftop hotels in Baner, Balewadi, and Koregaon Park has been a growing concern. Despite numerous complaints from local citizens, no action was initially taken against these establishments. The inaction was attributed to the influence of powerful city industrialists, politicians, and their close relatives, who were behind these unauthorized constructions. Supported by officials from the police, state excise department, and municipal corporation, these establishments sold liquor until the early hours of the morning.

The turning point came with the May 19 accident in Kalyaninagar that exposed the close relationship between the restaurant and pub businesses and the administration. The public outcry following this incident pressured the administration to act. Consequently, a series of actions commenced last month to address the issue.

However, initial actions did not target some areas, including Baner, Balewadi, Deccan Gymkhana, and Koregaon Park, where unauthorized sheds were re-erected after being demolished.

A significant discovery was made at L3 Pub on FC Road, where a party continued until dawn. A video emerged showing drug consumption at the venue. This revelation, coinciding with the legislative session, highlighted the issue of open drug parties in Pune, prompting the Maharashtra state government to take serious notice.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ordered strict action, leading to the PMC demolishing 36,845 square feet of construction at 29 locations on June 25. The following day, an additional 50,061 square feet of construction was demolished at 19 locations.

Despite the ongoing efforts, officials have faced significant challenges. An officer disclosed that unauthorized pubs, bars, and restaurants continue to operate due to pressure from influential leaders who often intervene to halt actions. “Our hands were tied. We knew about the unauthorized establishments, but powerful leaders would pressure us to stop the actions. In many places, only partial actions could be taken. However, after such incidents, we get the freedom to take decisive action,” said the officer.

The municipal corporation’s recent actions represent a significant step towards addressing the issue of unauthorized constructions in Pune. However, sustained efforts and support from higher authorities are essential to ensure that these establishments do not resurface. The administration’s ability to act decisively without external pressure will be crucial in maintaining the integrity of urban development and ensuring the safety and well-being of Pune’s residents.
