Pune: Crime Branch Unit 2 and Nigdi Police Capture Jewelry Thieves, Resolve 8 Theft Cases in Pimpri Chinchwad

Pimpri Chinchwad, 27th August 2024: Recently, incidents of women being robbed in secluded areas, elderly people being targeted, and robbers stealing ornaments from people on bikes have been increasing in Pimpri Chinchwad. A notorious duo known for specializing in stealing ornaments, particularly women’s mangalsutras, have been arrested by the Pimpri Chinchwad Police’s Crime Branch Unit 2 and Nigdi Police Station. This arrest has led to the recovery of 12 tolas of gold ornaments and the resolution of 8 crimes.

Sadiq Shamal Khan Irani (age 34, resident of Ahmednagar) and Nargis Jaffer Irani (age 45, resident of Shivajinagar) have been arrested by the Pimpri Chinchwad Police.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Doiphode, the Crime Branch Unit 2, under Senior Police Inspector Jitendra Kadam, has consistently taken action against chain snatching and closely monitored notorious criminals. Recently, there has been an increase in theft incidents, particularly targeting women for their ornaments. Police officials began investigating CCTV footage from areas where thefts had been reported.

Police Sub Inspector Shivanand Swami of Unit 2 received information from a confidential source that the Irani duo, known for stealing ornaments, was roaming suspiciously in the Nigdi area. Unit 2 informed Senior Police Inspector Shatrughna Mali and Police Inspector Nilesh Waghmare from Nigdi Police Station, and a team was dispatched to the location. They set up a trap near Transport Nagar and arrested Sadiq and Nargis.

It was revealed that the two-wheeler used by Sadiq was stolen. After prolonged and skilful interrogation, the accused confessed. The investigation revealed that Sadiq Shamal Khan Irani is a notorious history-sheeter with more than 19 registered crimes, including chain snatching, fraud, and others. Sadiq, along with his accomplice Nargis, had committed numerous robberies using various two-wheelers across different parts of Pimpri Chinchwad.

During the operation, gold weighing 12 tolas, worth Rs 9 lakh, was confiscated. This action resolved 8 cases, including 3 registered at Nigdi Police Station and 1 each at Chinchwad, Chikhali, MIDC Bhosari, Chakan, and Swargate Police Stations.

This operation was conducted under the guidance of Pimpri Chinchwad Commissioner of Police Vinoy Kumar Choubey, Joint Commissioner of Police Dr Shashikant Mahavarkar, Additional Commissioner of Police Vasant Pardeshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Doiphode, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Dr Vishal Hire. The team, led by Senior Police Inspector Jitendra Kadam, Senior Police Inspector Shatrughna Mali, and Police Inspector (Crime) Nilesh Waghmare, included Police Sub Inspectors Mahadev Yalmar, Kerappa Mane, Shivanand Swami, and Deepak Kharat, as well as Police Constables Nagargoje, Usha Dale, Ajit Sanap, Shivaji Mundhe, and Uddhav Khedkar, all from Unit 2 and Nigdi Police Station.
