Pune, 20th August 2024: First Class Judicial Magistrate Amrit Birajdar has ordered the husband of a Muslim woman to pay an additional amount of Rs 1.05 lakh for their daughter’s educational expenses, despite the wife already receiving interim alimony. The order specifies that if the amount is not paid within fifteen days of the judgment, it will accrue interest at a rate of 12% until recovered. This verdict offers relief to children who experience educational setbacks following parental separation.

Salim and Salma (names changed) were married during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before their marriage, Salma worked at a private hospital, but Salim insisted that she quit her job. After she became pregnant, Salim demanded that she avoid Hindu doctors and instead seek advice from a Maulana. Salma endured mental harassment, with repeated pressure to have a boy. During her pregnancy, she was beaten and thrown out of the house.

Salma filed a domestic violence case through Advocate Neeta Bhavar. While the case was ongoing, Salma gave birth to a daughter and was granted interim maintenance. As her daughter began school, Salma, through her advocate, requested financial support for educational expenses. The court has now ordered her husband to pay Rs 1.05 lakh for their daughter’s education.
