Pune: Contractor Booked After Fatal Drowning Incident Along Katraj-Kondhwa Road

Pune, 10th June 2024: The Kondhwa police have registered a case against a contractor following the death of a girl who drowned in stagnant water accumulated in a pit dug for widening and grade separator work along the Katraj-Kondhwa road.

Jagdish Chhagan Shilawat (35), residing on Katraj-Kondhwa road, filed a complaint at Kondhwa police station. The Shilawat family, engaged in knife sharpening, resides in the slums along the road. Heavy rainfall filled the pit dug for road widening, leading to the incident. On Saturday morning (8th June), Sargam (15), Janubai (16), Tejal (12), and Muskan (16) went to wash clothes in the pit.

Muskan slipped into the water, prompting the others to enter in a rescue attempt. All of them drowned due to the slippery surface. The fire brigade retrieved them, but Muskan died before reaching the hospital.

Investigations revealed the absence of safety measures, leading to the accident. As a result, the police have charged the contractor with culpable homicide. Crime Branch Police Inspector Mansingh Patil is leading the investigation.
