Pune: Compensation of Rs 5 Lakh Sanctioned for Bopdev Ghat Rape Survivor by Legal Services Authority

Pune, 20th October 2024: The survivor of the Bopdev Ghat gang-rape case will be compensated with ₹5 lakh by the Pune District Legal Services Authority under the ‘Manodhairya’ scheme. This comes after the Legal Services Authority approved her application for compensation.

The ‘Manodhairya’ scheme, managed by the Legal Services Authority, provides financial assistance to victims of sexual assault and torture. The incident occurred on October 3, when a young woman, who was out for a walk with a friend, was gang-raped at Bopdev Ghat. Two of the accused have since been arrested, while a third accomplice is still being questioned by authorities.

The survivor submitted an application to the Legal Services Authority for compensation under the ‘Manodhairya’ scheme. Her request was processed and approved within nine days, bringing her much-needed financial relief.

As per the compensation guidelines, the survivor will receive 25% of the ₹5 lakh in cash, while the remaining 75% will be deposited as a fixed deposit in a bank for a period of ten years. The interest earned from this deposit will be used to cover the survivor’s daily expenses.

The ‘Manodhairya’ scheme was established to rehabilitate women and children who have been victims of sexual crimes. Through this initiative, victims can receive compensation ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹10 lakh, providing them with financial support and helping them rebuild their lives.

Pune District Legal Services Authority Secretary Sonal Patil confirmed that the application was submitted on October 11 and resolved by October 19 under the guidance of Principal District and Sessions Judge Mahendra Mahajan.
