Pune 12th Oct 2023: The state government has formed a committee to investigate the allegations of involvement of the hospital staff in alleged drug racket running from Sassoon General Hospital in the city involving the prisoners of Yerawada Central Jail who were admitted for the treatment. The committee has been given 15 days to submit a detailed final report on the matter.

The issue came after drug racketeer Lalit Patil who was admitted to the hospital for treatment during his jail term in Yerawada Jail was found running his drug business from the hospital and later fled from here. The incident revealed that many prisoners with even less serious health problems were also admitted to the hospital for months. This led to serious allegations against the hospital staff and police personnel for helping them extend their stay and continue illegal activities from hospital.

The state government has formed a four-member committee to investigate the matter. The committee will be led by Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar, director of Medical Education and Research Mumbai while Dr. Sudhir Deshmukh, Dean of Government Medical College Solapur, Dr. Hemant Godbole, Professor and HOD of Government Medical College Nanded and Dr. Eknath Pawar, Professor and HOD at Grant Government Medical College Mumbai will be the members. The committee has been asked to investigate the matter in detail and submit the final report to the government within the next 15 days.
