Pune, 8th September 2024: The price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been increased by 90 paise per kg, bringing the new rate to Rs 85.90 per kg in Pune and surrounding areas, including Pimpri-Chinchwad, from Sunday midnight. However, there has been no change in the rates of Piped Natural Gas (PNG).

Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), which supplies CNG to Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan, Talegaon, and Hinjawadi, announced the hike due to rising costs in the international natural gas market. The increase, though nominal, is attributed to the rising demand and higher import costs of natural gas.

Despite the price hike, MNGL highlighted that CNG remains a cost-effective alternative to conventional fuels. Compared to petrol, CNG offers a 49% savings, while it is 27% cheaper than diesel. Rickshaw drivers also benefit from a 29% savings when using CNG instead of petrol or diesel.

The latest price hike follows a previous increase in July, when CNG prices went up by Rs 1.50 per kg, pushing the rate to Rs 85 per kg. With the continuous rise in CNG prices, motorists, who turned to this more eco-friendly fuel as an alternative to petrol and diesel, are now feeling the pinch.

While CNG remains a more affordable option, the ongoing price increases are straining the pockets of Pune’s motorists and rickshaw drivers.
