Pune, 3rd August 2024: In the wake of recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding in parts of Pune, citizens have faced significant hardship. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has taken swift action to address the situation. During a review meeting, he instructed the commencement of a robust flood protection wall at Khadakwasla, Ekta Nagar, and Sinhagad Road as an immediate measure to prevent future flooding.

Additionally, CM Shinde emphasized the need for a long-term solution, directing the Pune District Collector, Pune Municipal Corporation, and Water Resources Department to collaborate with experts to devise a plan for the permanent rehabilitation of citizens residing in the Blue Line areas. The directive came following a meeting with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray, who led a delegation to meet the Chief Minister at his official residence, Varsha bungalow in Mumbai.

The municipal commissioner reported that approximately 3 lakh houses in Ekta Nagar and Sinhagad Road are situated on the Blue Line and have been there for many years. In response, the Chief Minister called for the redevelopment of these areas by granting them special status and instructed the preparation of a comprehensive plan.

Deepak Kapur, Principal Secretary of Water Resources, informed that all relevant agencies had been adequately notified during the release of water from Khadakwasla Dam. Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosle highlighted the administration’s prompt relief and rescue efforts during the flood. He also mentioned that heavy rainfall in the dam area necessitates the inclusion of flood protection measures in the river improvement project to mitigate future flooding risks.

The Chief Minister was informed about the extensive damage to vehicles during the flood. Due to existing regulations, compensation has not been forthcoming. CM Shinde directed the Pune Municipal Commissioner and District Collector to liaise with insurance companies to expedite compensation for affected vehicle owners.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of supporting flood-affected citizens. He noted that while various organizations are providing assistance, District Collectors should ensure adequate food supplies for the poor residents of Ekta Nagar and Sinhagad Road. CM Shinde personally communicated with Pune District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase to give necessary instructions.
