Pune, 9th August 2023: In a bid to crack down on deceptive wedding bureaus and thwart underage marriages, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced a series of stringent measures. Newlywed couples are now required to register their marriages within 90 days, while wedding bureaus must renew their registrations biennially with local ward offices.

According to the PMC’s health department, responsible for overseeing marriage registrations, couples are mandated to submit essential documents along with ‘Form A’ and a registration fee of Rs 2,000. Similarly, wedding bureaus must adhere to the new requirement of renewing their Marriage Board Registration Certificates every two years from the date of issuance. Ensuring thorough verification of all necessary documents with the relevant field office a day before scheduled appointments is now a prerequisite.

The Maharashtra Marriage Board Regulation and Marriage Registration Act stipulate that either the bride or groom must be a resident within the jurisdiction of the Pune Municipal Corporation to be eligible for marriage registration. Within 90 days of the marriage date, the bridegroom is expected to personally file the marriage memorandum (Form D) application form before the registrar, accompanied by three witnesses.

Notably, late submission of documents will result in penalties, underscoring the PMC’s commitment to streamlining the registration process and maintaining accurate records.

This initiative serves a twofold purpose: monitoring marriage statistics within the city and thwarting the exploitation of documents for fraudulent purposes, particularly the occurrence of sham marriages involving underage individuals. To further promote awareness about these changes, PMC has initiated a campaign involving posters disseminated through local marriage bureaus.

Kalpana Baliwant, Deputy Health Officer at PMC, highlighted the core objectives of these measures. “This initiative is geared towards raising awareness among citizens while ensuring a comprehensive record of all marriages. The 90-day registration deadline aims to expedite the process and ensure compliance with the new regulations.”
