Pune Businessman Gets Extortion Calls From Goon Lodged In Jail, Case Filed

Pune, 18th May 2024: Pune city police have booked notorious gangster Tabrez Mehboob Sutar for allegedly making extortion calls to a businessman while imprisoned.

Tabrez Sutar, a resident of Katraj, has been in jail since March 2022 and faces seven criminal cases, including three murders. According to a press release issued on Friday, a Pune-based businessman in the electric and real estate sectors recently filed a complaint against Sutar with the anti-extortion cell of the Pune city police crime branch.

The businessman reported that Sutar demanded money, claiming the businessman had made substantial profits. Sutar and his accomplices allegedly threatened the businessman, saying he needed to pay if he wanted his business to continue operating smoothly. Initially, the gang extorted Rs 10 lakh, but they later demanded an additional Rs 30 lakh.

A first information report (FIR) has been lodged at the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station against Sutar and his aides: Avinash More of Sahkarnagar, Sagar Dhumal of Upper Indiranagar, and Kumar alias Pappu Savkar of Saswad. They face charges under sections 386, 387, 504, 506 (2), 507, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Crime branch officials have arrested More and Dhumal, while a search is underway for Savkar. Police described Sutar as a notorious criminal and a member of the feared Bapu Nayar gang in Pune.

Sutar is currently incarcerated in Nagpur prison. Previously, while held in Kolhapur jail, he allegedly used multiple mobile phone numbers to make the extortion calls. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Authorities have appealed to traders and the business community to report any extortion demands made by criminal elements.
