Kasba Peth, 13 May 2024: During the ongoing voting process in Pune, a protest led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has garnered attention as symbols of Congress candidates were prominently displayed at booths. This has led to uproar against the alleged violation of democratic principles.

The Lok Sabha elections for Pune constituency commenced today, with BJP’s candidates raising objections amidst voting. At Phadke Haud area, BJP leaders noticed Congress banners at polling centers, igniting the protest right on the streets.

Former BJP president Hemant Rasane, leading the protest alongside hundreds of party workers, emphasized the issue at hand. As voting began this morning, banners and symbols of Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar were seen at his booth at Phadke Haud, prompting immediate objection and protest by BJP members.

Hemant Rasane commented, “Even after the conclusion of campaigning on the 11th, symbols of opposition candidates are displayed at booths during voting today. This undermines democracy, and we demand action against this violation.”

Notably, two years ago, after the demise of MLA Mukta Tilak, a by-election was held in which Hemant Rasane, BJP’s candidate, contested against Ravindra Dhangekar, who emerged victorious. The rivalry between them has been long-standing, with Dhangekar securing a significant win.

Today, voting is underway in 11 constituencies across the state, including Pune. BJP has nominated former mayor Murlidhar Mohol, while Congress has put forth MLA Ravindra Dhangekar as its candidate to secure Pune’s seat.

The protest highlights the tense electoral atmosphere in Pune, with both BJP and Congress vying for dominance in the crucial Lok Sabha elections.
