Pune, 14th August 2024: In response to a tragic incident in Kolkata, where a resident doctor was raped and murdered, Byramjee Jeejeebhoy (BJ) Government Medical College has taken immediate steps to enhance security for female doctors. The college administration is increasing the number of CCTV cameras on campus and at Sassoon General Hospital.

Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean of BJ Medical College, announced that CCTV cameras will be strategically installed at key locations on the college premises and at Sassoon Hospital. A committee has been appointed to determine the optimal placement for these additional cameras.

Given the large size of the BJ Medical College and Sassoon Hospital campuses, female resident doctors often have to navigate between departments during night shifts. To address this, female security guards will escort doctors at night, and regular patrols will be conducted. Areas lacking adequate lighting will be improved to enhance safety.

The Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has begun an indefinite strike to protest the Kolkata incident. Out of 566 resident doctors at BJ Medical College, 386 are participating in the strike, while 180 are working. Faculty from other departments are assisting with patient care in the outpatient department. Dr. Pawar assured that patient care at Sassoon Hospital remains unaffected.

For August 13 (until 2 PM), the daily average patient care statistics at Sassoon Hospital are as follows:

– Major surgeries: 21 – 48
– Minor surgeries: 38 – 145
– Deliveries: 12 – 30

Dr. Pawar added, “We are taking all necessary steps to ensure that patient care at Sassoon Hospital continues uninterrupted despite the resident doctors’ strike. A letter will be sent to the Public Health Department and the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department requesting additional doctors.”
