Bhosari, 2nd July 2024: An Army veteran and accomplished boxer drowned after being swept away in the famous Tamhini Ghat Waterfall due to overflowing water in Pune District. The incident occurred on Sunday, 30th June, and the body was found in Mangaon, Raigad District.

The deceased, identified as Swapnil Sampat Dhawade (38), a resident of Dhawade Wasti, Bhosari, had served in the Indian Army for 18 years before retiring recently. He was also a national-level boxer and worked as a personal trainer at a gym.

Swapnil had gone to Tamhini Ghat with a group of 32 people from his gym. While at Plus Valley in Tamhini Ghat, he jumped into a plunge pool of the waterfall for enjoyment while someone in the group filmed him. However, Swapnil misjudged the water’s strength and attempted to reach the side but was swept away by the current.

The search operation involved the Paud Police, Tamhini Forest Department, Disaster Management Cell of Mulshi, Shivdurg Mitra Lonavala, and Vanyajeev Rakshak Maval. The operation was challenging due to increasing water pressure, with some teams also involved in the search for another group swept away at Bhushi Dam near Lonavala.
