Pimpri Chinchwad, 8th October 2026: With the city already receiving water on alternate days and facing a deficit of around 105 MLD, Pimpri Chinchwad may have to brace for an additional 10% water cut from October 16 amid drought-like conditions and concerns over water availability through the year.

The possibility of the additional cut comes after the state Water Resources Department issued directions for a 10% reduction in water allocation from October 16. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is expected to plan its distribution based on the quantity of water it receives from the dams.

The city currently receives around 665 MLD of water—540 MLD from Pavana dam, 95 MLD from Andra dam and 30 MLD from the MIDC. Against the estimated daily requirement of around 770 MLD, the city is already facing a shortfall of 105 MLD.

Alternate-day water supply has been in place in Pimpri-Chinchwad since November 25, 2019. The Water Resources Department had earlier imposed a 15% cut due to delayed rainfall. Although heavy rains in July filled the Pavana and Andra dams to 100%, the earlier cut was not withdrawn.

The situation has particularly affected housing societies in Wakad. Around 34 societies, each having between 200 and 500 flats, are reportedly receiving only about 50% of their requirement from the civic body and are relying on private tankers to meet their needs. Residents have demanded restoration of full water supply.

“There are orders from the state government regarding a 10% water cut from October 16. Accordingly, a letter will be sent to the municipal corporation regarding the reduction,” said Kiran Deshmukh, executive engineer, Water Resources Department.

PCMC deputy city engineer Ajay Suryawanshi said the civic body was already supplying less water than the demand and would plan distribution based on the quantity received from the dams from October 16.

“Once we receive the letter, planning will be done accordingly,” he said.
