Pune 26th August 2023: The Maharashtra Minister Uday Samat has said that the government is taking positive steps to speed up the Purandar Airport project in Pune and a proposal to acquire land needed for the airport was received from Adani group. Samant while speaking to media in Pune said that around Rs 5,000 Crore fund is needed to acquire land for the new Purandar Airport. However, since the government cannot make this amount available a proposal has been received from Adani Group which is ready to spend money. He further said that a final decision on it will be taken after a meeting with CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.

Samat said that a discussion is underway to decide whether the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) MIDC will acquire the land for the airport or Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) will do it. He said that a final decision will be taken on this within next two months and things will progress for the new dedicated airport for Pune.

It may be noted that the state government had finalised a location in Purandar to build a dedicated airport for Pune. A total of around 22,832 hectares of land was identified from 7 villages in the district. However, the defence ministry later refused permission after granting it earlier due to which the project was stuck. According to reports, the government has now sorted the issues with all concerned departments and the work will start once land acquisition is completed.

Pune city currently has an operational airport at Lohegaon but since the runway is owned by the defence ministry the civil operations have to face many restrictions. A demand to build a dedicated airport for Pune city has been pending for a long time.
