Pune: 23-Year-Old Law Student Drowns at PCMC-Run Swimming Pool in Thergaon

Thergaon, 22nd April 2025: A 23-year-old law student, Shahbaz Khan, lost his life due to drowning at the Kantilal Khinvasara Narsimha Patil Swimming Pool in Thergaon on Sunday afternoon. The facility is operated by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
The incident occurred around 3:30pm. Shahbaz, a final-year law student from Hadapsar, had been visiting his relatives in Wakad when he decided to go for a swim at the civic-run pool. He was reportedly alone at the time.
Wakad police have registered a case of accidental death. “The post-mortem has confirmed that drowning was the cause of death. The family has not alleged any foul play or filed a formal complaint,” said a senior officer from Wakad Police Station.
Shahbaz was the only son of a Pune-based auto rickshaw driver. His sudden demise has left his family and community in deep grief.
PCMC officials stated that lifeguards were present when the tragedy occurred. “Our trained lifeguards acted swiftly. They pulled the youth out of the pool and performed CPR before taking him to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared him dead on arrival,” a senior official from PCMC’s sports department told Punekar News.
At present, PCMC manages 10 active swimming pools across the twin cities, with three more undergoing maintenance. These pools host coaching sessions, daily visitors, and monthly pass holders.
