Pune, 1st April 2024: In the last three months, a joint effort by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) and Regional Transport Office (RTO) teams has resulted in the prosecution of 1,620 rickshaws for violating rules by stopping near PMPML bus stations or stops in Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad.

Despite regulations prohibiting rickshaw drivers from stopping within 50 meters of PMP bus stands or bus stops, many drivers flout this rule, causing inconvenience to PMPML drivers, passengers, and others. Complaints regarding rickshaws obstructing bus drivers and passengers prompted action from the administration.

In response, two teams comprising four PMPML employees and one RTO officer were formed to address the issue. Over the last three months, these teams have taken action against a total of 1,620 rickshaw drivers who violated the rules by coming within 50 meters of PMPML’s main bus stands in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Additionally, by the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, action has been taken against 530 vehicles, including rickshaws, Ola, Uber, and luxury buses, for obstructing traffic in the Swargate Bus Stand area. A total fine of Rs 3 lakh 32 thousand has been collected from these vehicles for traffic violations.

Moving forward, the RTO team will continue to address issues related to rickshaws and other private vehicles parked near PMPML bus stands. It is emphasized that parking in these areas not only violates traffic regulations but also poses risks to traffic safety. Therefore, private vehicle owners are urged not to park in these areas to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety for all, the officials said.
