Pune, 28th December 2023: The Election Commission has commenced the process of cleaning the voter list in the Pune district, uncovering discrepancies such as double name registration and identical photographs for 28 thousand and 1 lakh 42 thousand 349 voters, respectively. In response, the Election Commission has issued notices, referred to as ‘Sample A,’ to the concerned voters.

As per Sections 17 and 18 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, a voter is entitled to have only one entry in the electoral roll. However, instances of names being recorded in more than one place have been identified. Notices have been sent to the affected voters to facilitate corrections.

The Collector and District Election Officer, Rajesh Deshmukh, have urged the concerned voters to choose the correct place on the notice indicating where they intend to have their name. The voters are required to tick the appropriate location and upload the notice along with a photocopy of their Aadhaar card to the provided email address. Alternatively, they can visit the designated voter centre level officer to process the confirmation letter.

The deadline for making corrections is set for January 1, 2024. Deshmukh emphasized that legal action will be taken against voters found with names in two places after this cleanup campaign, as recommended by the Election Commission. The initiative aims to ensure accuracy and integrity in the electoral roll ahead of future elections.
