Public Health Department to Investigate Four Zika-Related Deaths in Pune

Pune, 2nd August 2024: The number of Zika patients in Pune is increasing daily, with the count now reaching 52. So far, four patients infected with Zika have died. A committee from the Public Health Department will investigate these deaths to determine the exact causes.

The highest number of Zika patients in Pune, 11, has been found in the Erandwane Ward Office area. Following that, 10 patients have been identified in the Dahanukar Colony Ward Office area. Other areas with reported cases include Kharadi (6), Pashan (5), Mundhwa (4), Sukhsagar Nagar (4), Ambegaon Budruk (3), Ghole Road (3), Kalas (2), Dhankawadi (1), Lohgaon (1), Dhole-Patil Road (1), and Wanowrie (1). On Thursday, three new patients were reported in the city: one from Gujarat Colony in Kothrud, one from Shivaji Chowk in Kharadi, and one from Mangalwadi on Senapati Bapat Road.

A 68-year-old patient from Gujarat Colony in Kothrud, whose Zika test came back positive, has died due to organ failure. A 78-year-old patient from Paranjape Athashri Society in Baner also died, with initial reports indicating heart disease as the cause. Two more patients, a 76-year-old from Erandwane and a 72-year-old from Kharadi, have died. These patients had comorbidities and were being treated in private hospitals. PMC Assistant Health Officer Dr. Suryakant Deokar confirmed that their Zika test results were positive after their deaths.
