Private Hospitals To Pay Biomedical Waste Based On Number Of Beds – Maharashtra State Government

Pune, 5th September 2024: The government has changed the fees for biomedical waste management and handling to private hospitals in the state. Hospitals will have to pay the fee based on the number of beds instead of capital investment.

Private hospitals are charged for biomedical waste management and handling. The said fee is for a period of three years and has to be deposited with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, And Climate Change has imposed the fee on private hospitals since 2016. The government started charging hospitals this fee against their capital investment which was opposed by the hospitals.

The Pune branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Pune branch of the Hospital Board of India had made a demand to Dr Avinash Dhakne, Member Secretary of the MPCB. It was demanded that hospitals should be charged biomedical waste charges based on patient beds rather than against capital investment. Finally, the government has issued an order to levy charges on the basis of hospital beds.

Biomedical Waste Management Revised Charges are as follows:

Zero hospital beds – Rs 1,000

1 to 10 beds – Rs 2,000

11 to 50 beds – Rs 5,000

51 to 100 beds – Rs 15,000

101 to 300 beds – Rs 50,000

301 to 500 beds – Rs One lakh

501 to 1,000 beds – Rs Two lakhs

More than 1,000 hospital beds – Rs Five lakhs

Laboratory, blood bank – Rs 5,000
