Pune, 3rd July 2024: The newly redeveloped Prayagraj Junction, which is being rebuilt at a record cost of ₹960 crores, is set to open in May 2027. The structural work for the new building on the Civil Lines side will be completed by November 2024, while the entire building and the city side’s new structure will be finished by December 2026. The station’s design, featuring airport-like facilities, aims to enhance the passenger experience significantly.

The redevelopment project, themed around heritage and development, is the most expensive in the country. It was highlighted during a review meeting at the North Central Railway headquarters, where General Manager Ashok Kumar Verma received updates. General Manager has mandated the completion of construction works at Subedarganj, Prayagraj Junction, Naini, Chheoki, Northeast Railway’s Rambagh, Jhunsi, and Northern Railway’s Prayagraj Sangam, Prayag, and Phaphamau by November.

In preparation for the 2025 Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, infrastructural work is ongoing at nine stations and will be completed before the event. Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay stated that the foundation stone for Prayagraj Junction’s redevelopment was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing on August 6. The redevelopment will cover an area of 483 square meters, with the second phase of pillar piling for the 72-meter-wide concourse on the Civil Lines side underway.

The first phase saw the foundation laid for the new building on the Civil Lines side. The station will offer world-class airport-like facilities, including shops, food plazas, and amenities for passengers to stay, eat, and shop under one roof. The company awarded the tender, Dinesh Chandra R. Agarwal Invesco Private Limited, has been instructed to complete the main structural work on the Civil Lines side by November 2024. All work is expected to be completed between February 2025 and December 2026 after the Kumbh Mela.

The new Prayagraj Junction building will be nine stories high (excluding the ground floor). It will feature a Building Management System (BMS), be disability-friendly, and be a green building. Additionally, there will be VIP lounges, sleeping pods, route-wise passenger movement facilities, and multi-level parking arrangements.
