Pune, 6th September 2023: The Pune Metropolitan Area Development Authority (PMRDA) has commenced the process of appointing an ‘Economic Technical Consultant’ to assess the feasibility of implementing the extended metro project from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor either through ‘Private Partnership’ (PPP) or ‘Employment of Contractor’ (EPC) mode. A decision in this regard will be made once the consultant submits their report.

A meeting of the Pune Unified Urban Transport Authority (PUMTA) was convened under the chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao to deliberate on this matter. During the meeting, PMRDA and Mahametro were tasked with independently preparing technical and financial reports for the eight-kilometer stretch between Pulgate and Hadapsar, assessing the project’s economic viability. It was agreed that a decision should be reached for this particular route.

PUMTA recommended that PMRDA appoint an ‘Economic Technical Consultant’ to determine the expansion of the Metro from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this route has already been completed by PMRDA, and the tender process for the appointment of a ‘Financial Technical Consultant’ for this route is now underway.

Current Scenario:

  • PMRDA oversees the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar metro project.
  • An extension of this route to Loni Kalbhor is under consideration.
  • The section from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate falls under the jurisdiction of Mahametro.
  • Mahametro has proposed a 28 km route from Khadakwasla to Kharadi.
  • PMRDA’s extended metro line covers Shivajinagar Pulgate, Hadapsar, and Loni Kalbhor, with a branch on Saswad Road.
  • Mahametro’s Khadakwasala route extends from Swargate, Pulgate-Hadapsar Phata to Kharadi.
  • A common (combined) route of approximately eight kilometers exists between Pulgate and Hadapsar on both of these routes, raising questions about its development.

Opinions:

  • PMRDA has plans for a metro car depot at this location and has reserved space for it.
  • Therefore, PMRDA argues for allowing the metro line work between Pulgate and Hadapsar.
  • Mahametro contends that there will be a metro car depot at Khadakwasla, and they are working on the metro line between Pulgate and Hadapsar.

Proposed Routes:

  • Mahametro has proposed a 28 km metro line from Khadakwasla-Swargate-Pulgate-Hadpasar Phata (Magarpatta City) to Kharadi.
  • PMRDA has proposed a 19 km metro line from Shivajinagar-Pulgate-Hadpasar to Loni Kalbhor.

PUMTA has directed the authority to appoint an ‘Economic Technical Consultant’ to determine whether the Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor metro line should be implemented through PPP or EPC. Accordingly, PMRDA has initiated the process of appointing consultants, said Rinaj Pathan, Chief Engineer, Metro Project, PMRDA.
