Pune: July 12, 2021: After the High Court reprimanded Pune Municipal Corporation for throwing the Metro debris into Mula and Mutha rivers, PMC decided to clean the debris along with taking action against the private players who too dump the debris in the rivers.

PMC has sent a proposal to district collector to increase the fine on the landowners who throw the debris into the rivers. Every year during the rainy season the issue of dumping debris into the river comes up as the majority of the lands along the riverside are privately owned.

PMC in its proposal mentioned that the city has 44 km long river line, and it is impossible for the civic body to keep an eye on it. Taking disadvantage of it, the private landowners dump the debris into riverbeds.

Social activist Sarang Yadwadkar said, “Until and unless action is taken against the officers who have allowed constructions along the flood line in Aundh and Baner area, the system will not move. Throwing of construction debris in the rivers in the city has become a norm”.

Additional commissioner Dr Kunal Khemkar said, “PMC is helping Metro administration to clear the debris. Similarly, we will be taking action against those who are doing construction work along the riverbed”.

Violation of norms

• Shivane, Sangamwadi, Baner, Aundh have large scale dumping of debris into riverbeds
• Shops were built at Baner by throwing debris in the riverbed
• PMC slapped notices to show owners in Sangamwadi
• PMC finally cleared the debris
