Pune, 24th October 2024: After a fire broke out at a reading hall (Abhyasika) in central Pune, concerns about student safety have come to the forefront. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to raise public awareness by inspecting libraries in the area. To this end, the fire brigade and PMC officials have jointly inspected various study facilities in Sadashiv Peth and issued notices to some of them, as stated by PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P.

Last week, a fire occurred in a building in Navi Peth, where a library for students preparing for UPSC and MPSC exams caught fire. The fire spread quickly due to the presence of books, notebooks, and furniture. Fortunately, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in time, and no injuries were reported. In light of this incident, the PMC administration has taken serious notice. PMC Commissioner Dr Rajendra Bhosale has instructed fire brigade officials to inspect these libraries.

There are many libraries in Sadashiv Peth, Navi Peth, Narayan Peth, and Shaniwar Peth, which are central to Pune. Many candidates preparing for competitive exams use these facilities. Some individuals have set up libraries in their buildings without obtaining the necessary permissions. Furthermore, safety requirements for students are not being followed in some locations. In response, the PMC has initiated this step to examine these facilities and advise them on necessary safety measures.

The investigation will also focus on whether the buildings housing libraries and hostels in Pune have adequate firefighting systems and other safety features for students. The PMC administration and the fire brigade are conducting a joint campaign to create awareness among stakeholders. Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. mentioned that the Taxation and Tax Collection Department of the PMC has been instructed to levy commercial taxes if residential premises are found to be used for educational purposes.

Dr Rajendra Bhosale, PMC Commissioner, stated that fire officials will check what safety measures are being implemented in libraries. Complaints from citizens regarding the harassment of students will also be addressed.
