New Delhi, 17th March 2025: On Sunday, the Congress party criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his appearance on a podcast with computer scientist Lex Fridman, accusing him of avoiding press conferences while opting for a discussion with a US-based podcaster.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary for Communications, aimed Modi’s remarks about criticism being essential to democracy. He accused the prime minister of systematically weakening institutions meant to ensure government accountability and relentlessly targeting critics.

“A leader who fears facing the media in a press conference has instead chosen the comfort of a foreign podcaster associated with the right-wing ecosystem,” Ramesh posted on X.

He further stated, “And yet, he dares to claim that ‘criticism is the soul of democracy’ while he has dismantled every institution meant to hold his government accountable and pursued his critics with an unmatched level of vengeance! There is no end to his hypocrisy.”

During his conversation with Fridman, Modi shared insights into his early life, the influence of Swami Vivekananda and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), as well as his views on geopolitics.

He mentioned having encouraged Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to engage in peace negotiations and also spoke about his association with former US President Donald Trump.

Drawing a comparison between Trump’s “America First” policy and his own “India First” vision, Modi emphasized their mutual focus on prioritizing national interests.

“I have observed President Trump both during his first term and now as he campaigns again. This time, he appears significantly more prepared, with a well-structured plan outlining clear steps to achieve his objectives,” Modi remarked.

He also credited the RSS for instilling in him a sense of purpose and the principles of selfless service, which continue to guide him in his leadership.
