Chennai, 6th April 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Rail Bridge in Tamil Nadu today, marking a significant milestone in India’s engineering achievements. The bridge, connecting Rameswaram to the mainland, is India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge. Built at a cost of over ₹700 crore, the 2.08 km-long structure replaces the century-old Pamban Bridge and features advanced materials like stainless steel reinforcements and protective coatings for enhanced durability.
The bridge has 99 spans and a 72.5-meter vertical lift span that rises to 17 meters to allow ship passage beneath. It is designed to support dual rail tracks and improve connectivity between Rameswaram and Chennai. This upgrade is expected to boost tourism and economic activities in the region. PM Modi also flagged off the new Rameswaram-Tambaram Express train service on this occasion, further enhancing transportation links.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi said, “This bridge is not just a marvel of engineering but also a symbol of India’s commitment to modern infrastructure development.” The inauguration coincided with Ram Navami, emphasizing the cultural significance of Rameswaram as the land of Lord Rama. This alignment highlights the government’s focus on integrating cultural heritage with modern infrastructure.
The new bridge addresses limitations of its predecessor, which served over a century but was closed in December 2022 due to corrosion damage. It offers enhanced clearance for ships and improved safety features, ensuring better transport efficiency. The vertical lift mechanism allows for smoother navigation of vessels, reducing congestion and enhancing maritime trade.
This project is part of broader infrastructure initiatives worth ₹8,300 crore launched by PM Modi during his Tamil Nadu visit. These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to transforming the state’s infrastructure landscape. The new Pamban Bridge is a testament to India’s engineering prowess and its ability to blend innovation with cultural preservation.
Local residents and business owners are optimistic about the economic benefits this new infrastructure will bring. “The new bridge will significantly improve connectivity and boost tourism in Rameswaram,” said Ramesh Kumar, a local hotel owner. “We expect a surge in visitors, which will positively impact our businesses.” With its advanced design and strategic importance, the New Pamban Rail Bridge is poised to become a landmark in Indian engineering.
