Pimpri-Chinchwad, 17th October 2026: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Regional Transport Office (RTO) has warned of strict action against manufacturers and users of fake High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) after reports emerged that unauthorised shops were making plates resembling genuine HSRPs but allowing vehicle owners to display names, designations and customised designs.

HSRPs are designed with specific security features to prevent tampering and improve vehicle identification. However, some unauthorised shops in Pimpri-Chinchwad are reportedly manufacturing lookalike plates that allow vehicle owners to use personalised designs, potentially violating prescribed registration plate standards.

Sandeep Chavan, Regional Transport Officer, Pimpri-Chinchwad, said manufacturing such plates without authorisation was illegal. He appealed to citizens to inform RTO officials about shops involved in the practice.

The RTO has warned that strict action will be taken against those manufacturing fake HSRP-like plates and vehicle owners found violating the applicable rules.

The requirement to install HSRPs was introduced for vehicles under central government regulations, with the mandate applying to vehicles registered from April 1, 2019. The requirement was subsequently extended to older vehicles in Maharashtra as part of efforts to standardise number plates and curb the use of unauthorised and fancy designs.
