Pimpri Chinchwad, February 1, 2021: Within 24 hours, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had to stay the notice served to Padma awardee social activist Girish Prabhune.

Apparently, according to the PCMC officials the trust and schools which Prabhune runs have not paid the property tax for some time now.

Meanwhile, State Legislative Council deputy speaker Neelam Gorhe sent a letter showing the displeasure to the municipal corporation. She also mentioned in her letter that the schools and educational trusts should fall into the educational tax bracket. She requested to reduce the tax also.

She said that the corporation was quick enough to send the notice, but ignores the construction activity in the river red zone.

Prabhune runs the Krantiveer Chapekar Smarak Samiti which operates the Krantiveer Chapekar primary and secondary school besides a school for the underprivileged students through Samrasta Punaruthan Gurukulam School.

The property dues of Rs 1.217,340 crores are due to the Krantiveer school while Gurukulum school’s property dues are over 1.77 crores. Considering the dues over Rs2 crores, the corporation sent him the notice.

But had to put a stay on it after Padmashri was declared to Prabhune on January 26. The notice was sent on January 21.

“We had asked them to send us the property papers, but there was no response. Similarly, they did not object to the property tax amount. So we sent them the notice”, said Smita Zagade, assistant municipal commissioner.
