Pune, 1st August 2024: Residents of Pune are flooding social media with photos and videos of potholes across the city, challenging the official claim that only 40 potholes remain to be repaired.

According to the Road Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 8,418 potholes were identified in the city from March 1 to July 31, and 8,378 potholes have been repaired. Additionally, 250 chambers have been fixed. However, many citizens are skeptical of these figures.

“Every day, I see new potholes in my area. It’s hard to believe that there are only 40 left to be repaired,” said Ramesh Patil, a resident of Kothrud. “The roads are in terrible condition, especially after the rains.”

Neha Sharma, who lives in Viman Nagar, shared a similar sentiment. “I drive my kids to school every day, and it’s a nightmare. There are potholes everywhere. If they say there are only 40 left, they must be talking about a different city,” she remarked.

The skepticism isn’t limited to just these two areas. Social media platforms are abuzz with complaints and visual evidence from various parts of Pune, showing roads riddled with potholes. “The civic body’s claim seems far from reality. We urge them to take immediate action to address the issue,” said Ajay Kulkarni from Baner.

Superintendent Engineer of the Road Department, Sahebrao Dandge, reiterated the official stance, stating, “Our teams have been working tirelessly to repair the potholes. We understand the public’s concerns, and we are committed to making the roads safer for everyone.”

Despite these assurances, the gap between the official figures and citizens’ experiences highlights the ongoing challenges in Pune’s road maintenance efforts. As the monsoon season continues, the pressure on the Municipal Corporation to address the issue effectively is mounting.

“We need long-term solutions, not just quick fixes,” emphasized Priya Desai, a student from Deccan Gymkhana.

For now, Punekars continue to navigate the city’s pothole-ridden roads, hoping for prompt and effective action from the authorities.
