Only 23 Pubs and Discotheques Authorized in Pune, Check List Here

Pune, 26th June 2024: A Right to Information (RTI) query has uncovered that only 23 pubs and discotheques in Pune are officially authorized. This revelation came from a query filed by Advocate Sameer Shaikh.

A discotheque license is required if any establishment has a dance floor or area. They can operate from 11:30 AM to 1:30 AM by complying with all laws related to noise pollution. The establishments must ensure that there are no activities hurting religious sentiments or involving obscene dances. Parking arrangements should be there.

The city police, in response to Shaikh’s application, listed 23 authorized pubs and discotheques. These establishments are located in areas including Mundhwa, Baner, Balewadi, Shivajinagar, Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Yerawada, Raja Bahadur Mills, Sangamwadi, and Shivajinagar.

According to Shaikh, hundreds of pubs with dance areas operate illegally in Pune, with only a small fraction being verified and authorized by the police.

Shaikh’s RTI was filed in the aftermath of the Kalyani Nagar Porsche accident on May 19, which resulted in the deaths of two IT professionals. The accident involved a juvenile driving a luxury car at high speed after allegedly consuming alcohol at two prominent clubs in the city.

“Pune and its surroundings have been home to hundreds of pubs and discos for many years, but a significant majority of these establishments operate without the necessary permissions from police authorities. According to recent RTI information, only 23 of these pubs and discos have obtained the required permissions, and one of these permissions has been canceled,” Shaikh stated.

When contacted, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told Punekar News, “There were 22 disc licenses issued from 2019 to 2023. We are reviewing the licenses, and if any violations are noticed, the process of cancellation will be initiated.”

Ajinkya Udane, Pune Co-Chapter Head, National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), said, “As an association representative we are going to request the Police Commissioner and the Pune Municipal Commissioner that a revisit to all the licenses is needed to the current scenario. The purpose been that the National Restaurant Association of India wants ease of Business in the Restaurant industry.”
