Number of Zika Patients in Pune Reaches 100; Five Deaths Reported

Pune, 14th September 2024: The number of Zika virus cases in Pune continues to rise, with the total now reaching 100. Among the infected, a significant portion includes pregnant women, and five deaths have been reported in the city so far.

The highest concentration of cases is in the Dahanukar Colony Ward Office area, which has reported 20 cases. Other affected areas include Erandwane with 16 cases, Kharadi with 13, Ghole Road and Pashan with 9 each, Sukhsagar Nagar and Mundhwa with 7 each, Wanwadi with 5, Kalas with 4, Koregaon Park and Ambegaon Budruk with 3 each, Lohegaon with 2, and Vishrambaug and Dhankawadi with 1 case each. According to Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Medical Officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 45 of the total 100 patients are pregnant women.

Of the five deaths, all were senior citizens with co-morbidities. The deceased include a 72-year-old man from Kharadi, a 95-year-old woman from Pashan, a 78-year-old man from Baner, a 68-year-old man from Kothrud, and a 76-year-old man from Karvenagar. The exact cause of their deaths is still under investigation.

Medical reports of the deceased have been sent to the State Health Department. The department’s Death Investigation Committee will determine the precise cause of death, which will clarify whether the fatalities were directly due to the Zika virus.
