Pune, 17th April 2023: The new variant ‘XBB.1.16’ of Corona, which is rapidly increasing the number of patients in the country, was first detected in Pune in the country. As the infectivity of this new variant is high, the number of patients will increase. The concern for the same has also been raised by BJ Medical College in Pune.

A large number of patients of the new variant of Corona ‘XBB.1.16’ are currently being found in the country. The number of newly diagnosed patients in the country has crossed over 10,000. Therefore, the Central Health Department has observed that the number of patients under treatment is continuously increasing. It seems that the number of corona patients in the state has been increasing continuously for the last 20 days.

The degree of change in the spike protein of a virus can determine its infectivity. The ‘Delta’ variant, which was considered the most lethal in the country, was overtaken by the Omicron which came out early last year. Hence, Delta infection decreased and Omicron increased.

The number of corona patients also increased rapidly. Most of the patients recovered from this infection at home with proper medication. They did not need to be hospitalized for treatment. Similarly, now the variant ‘XBB.1.16’ is being found.

New variants ‘BA.1’, and ‘BA.2’ came out from Omicron. Also, ‘BJ1’ and ‘BM.1.1.1’ combined to form a new variant. This resulted in the new variant ‘XBB’.
