New Director Appointed At DRDO’s R&DE Laboratory In Pune After Kurulkar’s Arrest In Espionage Case

Pune, 1st June 2023: Dr. Makarand Joshi has assumed the role of Director at the Research and Development Establishment (R&DE) Laboratory located in Dighi, Pune, which operates under the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

The appointment of Dr. Joshi comes after the arrest of former Director, Dr. Pradeep Kurulkar, by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on charges of divulging confidential defence information to Pakistan. The post of director had been vacant since then, but it has now been filled by Dr. Joshi.

Dr. Joshi holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University in the USA. He joined the R&DE Lab as an engineer in August 2000 and has made significant contributions to the development of various technologies, processes, and products within the organization.

R&DE Laboratory, established six decades ago, is a prominent engineering laboratory with a focus on indigenous development of engineering systems for the Indian Armed Forces. It has played a pivotal role in the development of combat engineering systems for the Army, including bridging systems, explosive systems, launchers, and ground support systems. The laboratory has also been at the forefront of advancements in composite products, robotic systems, and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS).

Dr. Joshi’s appointment as the Director of R&DE Laboratory brings with it renewed leadership and expertise to continue the laboratory’s mission of innovation and advancement in defence technologies. The DRDO and R&DE Laboratory express confidence in Dr. Joshi’s capabilities to further strengthen the organization’s research and development endeavors, reinforcing India’s position as a leading force in defence technology.
