Mumbai Police Issues Third Summon To Stand-Up Comedian Kunal Kamra Over Parody Song Controversy

Mumbai, 2nd April 2025: Mumbai Police has issued a third summon to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, asking him to appear for questioning on 5th April in connection with alleged derogatory remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. According to police officials, Kamra was summoned twice earlier but failed to appear for the investigation.
The controversy erupted after Kamra performed a parody song during a show in Mumbai, which was perceived as targeting Shinde. The song indirectly referred to Shinde as a traitor following his rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray. Although Shinde’s name was not explicitly mentioned in the performance, it sparked outrage among Shiv Sena workers. Last month, enraged party members vandalized the studio where the show had been recorded.
Following a complaint from a Shiv Sena MLA, Khar Police registered an FIR against Kamra under defamation-related sections of the BNS. In an attempt to ensure his compliance, a team from Khar Police visited Kamra’s family home in Mumbai’s Mahim area on Monday to verify whether he would respond to the summons.
On 28th March, the Madras High Court granted Kamra interim anticipatory bail. Justice Sundar Mohan also issued a notice to Khar Police and scheduled the next hearing of the case for 7th April.
