Pune, 31st August 2021: Water pollution is increasing due to untreated sewage being discharged into the rivers. Taking action in this regard, the Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had frozen Rs 15 crore from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) three years ago. However, this issue has not yet been properly addressed. Therefore, MPCB has once again started the process of action against the PMC.

About 45 per cent of the wastewater generated in the city area is not treated, which has led to an increase in river pollution. The MPCB has issued guidelines for immediate action in this regard. However, due to the non-completion of work within the stipulated time, the board has resumed the process of action. After analyzing the matter, the corporation will be fined, informed officials of the MPCB.

Earlier in 2019, the PMC had to face similar consequences. The board had frozen the municipal corporation’s fund of Rs 15 crore. Now the MPCB will take punitive action against the PMC once again.
