Pune, 6th June 2024: On Thursday (6th June), the monsoon rains made their entry into the Maharashtra State, drenching Pune, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Solapur. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted an escalation in rainfall starting from Saturday.

As per the IMD, monsoon showers have been observed in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri and Solapur, Telangana’s Medak, Bhadrachalam and Vijayanagar, and have reached Islampur in West Bengal. The conditions are favourable for the progression of monsoon rains, with Mumbai, Vidarbha, and North Maharashtra anticipated to experience rainfall within the next three days.

A low-pressure zone has formed in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Goa, accelerating the advancement of the Arabian Sea monsoon branch. As a result, the intensity of rainfall is expected to increase from Saturday (9th June), particularly in Konkan, Mumbai, and neighbouring districts of the Western Ghats.

Historically, monsoon rains typically reach Goa by the 5th of June and South Konkan by 7th of June. This year, the onset of rains in South Konkan occurred a day earlier. On average, Pune receives rainfall by 10th June and Mumbai by 11th June. Dr Anupam Kashyapi, a retired scientist from IMD, has indicated the likelihood of early arrival of monsoon rains in Pune and Mumbai this year. Additionally, an orange warning has been issued by the IMD for Kolhapur and Sindhudurg, forecasting heavy rains on Sunday and Monday.
