Pune, 8th November 2023: In a groundbreaking development, the Divisional Railway Hospital in Pune marked a historic achievement by successfully completing the first-ever lumbar spine surgery through endoscopy. The procedure, a bilateral L4-L5 discectomy, was performed by Dr. Mohit Mutha, a renowned spine surgeon, and assisted by Dr. Naveen Kumar, the hospital’s DMO and Anaesthetist.

The patient undergoing the innovative surgery had been grappling with severe chronic low backache radiating to the lower foot, significantly impacting their quality of life and day-to-day activities.

Typically, such surgeries come with a hefty price tag, often exceeding 2.5 lakh in corporate hospitals. However, the Divisional Railway Hospital’s successful foray into endoscopic spine surgery not only represents a medical milestone but also offers a cost-effective alternative for patients in need.

The entire surgery, lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes, showcased the precision and expertise of the medical team involved. Dr. Mohit Mutha, commenting on the achievement, emphasized the significance of this approach, stating, “This minimally invasive surgery, conducted through a 6 to 7 mm hole, brings with it a multitude of advantages, including reduced pain and faster recovery times.”
