Pune, 14th February 2024 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced the candidature of Medha Kulkarni, former MLA from Kothrud in Pune, for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra. The decision ends speculation surrounding the party’s nominee for the crucial seat, intensifying the intra-party competition.

With 56 Rajya Sabha seats vacant across 15 Indian states, the elections are scheduled for February 27, and the deadline for filing nominations is February 16. The BJP had already announced candidates from various states, but Maharashtra remained undecided, creating a buzz of interest among potential contenders.

Among the prominent figures vying for the nomination were Vinod Tawde, Ashok Chavan, Dr. Ajit Gopchde, Harshvardhan Patil, and others. The inclusion of Ashok Chavan and Ajit Gopchde, who recently switched from the Congress to the BJP, adds an interesting dynamic to the political landscape.

The unexpected nomination of Medha Kulkarni from Pune is seen as an effort to address discontent within the Brahmin community in the region. Kulkarni expressed gratitude for the nomination, stating, “I told the party that I just want to work. I don’t know what the seniors thought about this, but thanks to the party for nominating me.”
