Kolkata, 16th August 2024: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued an ultimatum to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the investigation into the murder and rape of a trainee doctor at RG KAR Medical College and Hospital. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) will hold a rally today, led by Banerjee, to demand justice and address the atrocities associated with the case. This comes as both the ruling TMC and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepare for protests across West Bengal.

The BJP will stage demonstrations throughout the state, including Kolkata, calling for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. The BJP’s women’s wing will also conduct a candle march to her residence in Kalighat. In contrast, Banerjee will lead a TMC rally in Kolkata, advocating for the death penalty for the accused. She has demanded that the culprits be executed by the following Sunday, giving the CBI a strict deadline to resolve the case.

Protests by doctors at RG KAR Medical College and Hospital have raised concerns about the handling of the case by Bengal police, with accusations of mishandling and evidence destruction. Derek O’Brien, Trinamool MP and spokesperson, stressed the need for the CBI to provide daily updates on the investigation. He noted that an ultimatum was given to the Bengal police until 17th August, and the same should apply to the CBI.

O’Brien described the crime as “exceptionally brutal and heinous” and expressed solidarity with the victim’s family. “The outrage of the people is completely understandable,” he said, extending his condolences and prayers to the family.
