Major General Smita Devrani and Brigadier Amita Devrani Honored with National Florence Nightingale Awards

New Delhi, 22nd June 2023: In a prestigious ceremony held today, President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, bestowed the esteemed National Florence Nightingale award upon two exceptional nursing professionals.

Major General Smita Devrani, Additional Director General (ADG) of the Military Nursing Service (MNS), was honored with the award for the year 2022, while Brigadier Amita Devrani, Brigadier MNS at Headquarters, Southern Command, received the accolade for the year 2023.

The National Florence Nightingale award, established by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in 1973, serves as a commendation for the exemplary services rendered by nurses and nursing professionals to society. The recognition granted to the Devrani sisters is a testament to their outstanding contributions and dedicated service spanning nearly four decades.

With her commission into the MNS in 1983, Major General Smita Devrani embarked on a remarkable journey. Prior to assuming the role of ADG MNS on October 1, 2021, she held pivotal clinical, staff, and administrative positions, including Principal Matron at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Brigadier MNS at Headquarters (Central Command), Principal Matron at Command Hospital (Southern Command), and Director MNS (Admin.).

Brigadier Amita Devrani joined the service in 1986, and her career has been equally illustrious. As of September 1, 2021, she assumed the esteemed appointment of Brigadier MNS, Southern Command.

Throughout her tenure, she has held significant roles such as Principal of the College of Nursing at Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, College of Nursing at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), and Vice Principal of the College of Nursing at Indian Naval Hospital Ship (INHS) Asvini. Both sisters proudly hail from the Kotdwar district of Uttarakhand.

The National Florence Nightingale awards bestowed upon Major General Smita Devrani and Brigadier Amita Devrani not only symbolize their personal accomplishments but also highlight the indelible impact they have made on the field of nursing. Their dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to healthcare have undoubtedly left an indomitable mark on society, inspiring countless others in the nursing profession.
