Mahabaleshwar, 23rd June 2024: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the South Central Konkan region and ghats for the next four days due to expected heavy rainfall.

Today’s satellite images show Mahabaleshwar in Satara district experiencing partly cloudy conditions. However, westerly winds are bringing significant moisture to the region, indicating an increase in rainfall starting this afternoon, particularly in South Central Konkan and the ghats.

Anupam Kashyapi, the former head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune, emphasized the severity of the situation, advising tourists to avoid travel to Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Satara, and Mahabaleshwar during this period.

“From today, we expect the rain to increase, especially in South Central Konkan and the ghats. Tourists should avoid traveling to these areas to ensure their safety,” Kashyapi said.

The IMD’s orange alert signifies the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could lead to waterlogging, landslides, and disruption of daily life. Residents and travelers in the affected areas are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.
